How is your leadership Attitude today?
What we call attitude is really our energy that we emit as we interact with others throughout the day. There are two types of energy and we have both at any given time. Neither type is good nor bad as they both serve a purpose in our lives. The question is: are you choosing your energy (responding) or is the world and the events around you choosing it for you (reacting)? The key to optimizing your leadership potential and effectiveness is to remember that you are ALWAYS at choice.
Let’s review the two types of energy–
- Anabolic Energy is a constructive, inspirational, healing, “building up” type of force. Associated with less stress. Creativity, collaboration, confidence increase with higher levels of this energy.
- Catabolic Energy is a destructive, damaging, draining, “tearing down” type of force. Often associated with stress. Conflict, defiance, competition and/or feelings of powerlessness are experienced with this lower level energy.
If you don’t think of yourself as a leader, then you are limited in your thinking. Leading is the way we move people, including ourselves, into action. How are you showing up today? Are you choosing your energy or are you defaulting to the world choosing it for you? “Easier said than done” you may be saying to yourself right now…in reality it is easy IF you make the decision to practice. Take a few seconds to pause long enough as you speed through your day to leverage your ability to choose.

Invest in Yourself
One of the most foundational and impactful things you can do to escalate your leadership potential and effectiveness is to create your own written and communicated leadership philosophy. This serves as your guidepost through both good times and challenging times.
It will also be your source of reflection and a reminder to those you lead, those you work with, and your key stakeholders. This concept originated in the military, known as the “Commander’s Intent,” and is now available for ALL leaders to use and apply.
