Perseverance Pays Off

This month’s Energy Check Newsletter is slightly delayed, on purpose. Even if you’re not a football enthusiast, you probably know that Super Bowl 58 was played
last Sunday. An entire season of football comes down to two teams ready to battle for the coveted Lombardi Trophy and all the accolades that come with it. While the Super Bowl is played every year, preparation for it is often years in the making. Win or lose,
both teams achieve a major milestone by playing in that final game of the season. Sports is often a great metaphor for life. We can learn so many lessons that directly apply to leadership, mindset, and the ability to focus on the moment while detaching from
outcomes.
The reality is that you can only control your own thoughts, feelings and actions. There is an ability to influence others for sure, but you cannot control other people. In a game situation, just like a work situation, or life situation, you cannot control every
variable that will interact to produce a given outcome. You CAN focus on process and setting yourself up for a foundation to lean
toward the outcomes you desire. So let’s talk gridiron on the heels of the Chiefs’ victory to unlock some tips on how to leverage perseverance.

Attitude is Everything

Thoughts drive feelings which in turn, drive actions and behaviors; a simple way to represent the human cognitive behavior model. While we may notice feelings first,
it’s the thought behind it that produced it in the first place. And, it’s the ability to change that thought at will that enables you to feel differently.

When you think of perseverance, what images come to mind? Normally, images of long suffering, or a grueling event or experience, right? Or, do you think of a timebound scenario; sticking to a long term plan such as graduating from college or vocational school,
or maybe it’s learning a new skill like piloting a boat or riding a motorcycle, or maybe it’s simply sticking to your fitness plan. All of these images are anchors to that word. What if you reset those anchors so that the images that you connect with perseverance
are always anabolic, uplifting, and motivating? What happens then?
Yes! When you reset the anchors tied to persevering, you’re changing how you think about it. Changing how you think changes how you feel. Does it make persevering less hard or difficult? Maybe, maybe not. What it DOES do is unlock your creativity, focus and
ability to see options, solutions and possibilities. It enables you to embrace gratitude on the journey. You flip from suffering to striving. Striving is how you leverage perseverance! Striving is how Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs
to their 4th Lombardi trophy.
KC entered the playoffs with the worst win/loss record in recent years. A talented wide receiver corps was plagued with “the dropsies.” After a controversial penalty that called back a TD against the Bills, a game KC went on to lose, both Reid and Mahomes cut
loose on the refereeing. Even great leaders have a breaking point and a season fraught with mental errors came to a head on that one penalty. Both leaders regrouped the following day; both apologized for their outburst and committed to moving forward and doing
better. Although the press and opposing teams would hang on to this situation for many weeks afterward, it was clear that Reid & Mahomes had moved on.
STRIVER TIP 1: Own your reality and then MOVE ON. Don’t drag the past with you like a duffel bag. Release it by giving yourself grace.

How do I know that Mahomes truly moved on? He was faithful to his receivers. He was questioned after every game about the drops yet he NEVER spoke ill of anyone. This frustrated the press and the fans. Reid kept saying, “We’re close, very close [to fixing it];
we’ll get it.” Outside of the team, most people did not share his optimism. Social media was filled with “For the love of all things holy, please bench MVS” comments. Neither Reid nor Mahomes faltered in their conviction that the receivers would “figure it
out.” In the game against the Ravens, it was MVS with the clutch catch to seal the game. The most maligned player on the team never lost his confidence AND, he never doubted that QB1 believed in him. MVS made the big catch when it mattered the most.
STRIVER TIP 2: Own THE reality and give grace to others. Accept what simply is without casting blame. Energetic acceptance is NOT approving or condoning, it is acknowledging reality as
IT IS, without judgment.
The first half of Super Bowl 58 was not playing out the way the Chiefs or their fans wanted. It seemed as though the bad habits from the regular season had suddenly reappeared. A terrible series coming out of halftime didn’t change that vibe. I even found myself
thinking, “Well, maybe the 49ers just want it more; they can still feel good about getting to the final game.” And then, an opportunity due to a San Francisco special teams error resulted in the Chiefs regaining possession! Now, some say that this was the
momentum shift in the game. What I do know is that thanks to the MANY post game interviews and clips coming out, that Mahomes continuously told his offense that they would be scoring on the next drive. As they took the field on that turnover, he was shouting
to his offensive, “We’re scoring NOW.” And they did…with a TD to MVS. From that point on, the Chiefs scored on every possession. In overtime, Hardman scores the winning TD….this is the man who was CUT from the team and picked up by the Jets at the end
of last year. Then picked up in a trade and back with the Chiefs once again. Upon his return, he remarked that he was a changed man and very grateful to be back with the Chiefs.
STIVER TIP #3 Manifest your uplifting intent to others and it will rebound back to you.

Every NFL team has amazingly talented players. Every team has a slew of talented coaches. It took the Chiefs 50 years to earn their second Lombardi trophy. What is so different now? As I’ve studied this team through a mindset lens, my conclusion is that Reid
has established a culture of STRIVING which enables them to persevere with both confidence and enthusiasm. They give grace to themselves, to each other, and they lift everyone up to their vision of success.

How can you apply these Striver Tips in your daily life journey, at work or at home? Ask yourself these questions…

STRIVER TIPS IN ACTION

1. What do I need to let go of today by giving myself grace?
2. What do I need to let go of today by giving grace to another person?
3. In what way can I manifest (demonstrate) my positive intent to others today?

What’s Your Baseline?

Everyone has a “baseline” that defines what they need to be foundationally focused, intentional and set up for success. Do you know what the components of your
baseline are? Most people do not. Everything is left to the variables of what they experience. Rather than being purposeful with their thoughts, feelings and actions, they amble through the day like a leaf being blown about in the wind. They allow external
factors to drive their internal mindset. That is the state of existing.
If you’ve been on the journey of self-improvement and mindset mastery with me via these newsletters, you already know the value of being intentional, the value of leaning into gratitude, the benefits of resisting the catabolic pull of the world around you.
That said, life can be unpredictable and at any moment, punch you squarely in the face. Then what?

Preparation is the key. Daily, relentless, consistent, preparation. This is where your baseline comes in. When you feel like you’ve been thrown back on your heels, it’s your baseline that will help you weather the attack and bounce right back or….not. While
the components of your baseline are simple, what they look like will be different for every person. Set yourself up for success by paying attention to and strengthening your baseline.

Know and Strengthen your Baseline

▪ Quality Sleep.
Notice I didn’t just say sleep! What does it take for you to get quality sleep? How much quality sleep do you need to feel GOOD? Remember, Quality Sleep begins with how you prepare to sleep.

▪ Food is Fuel. What kinds of foods does your body need to function well? Not sure? Easy way to start is to first think about what foods (or
beverages) make you feel sluggish, bloated, mentally foggy. Write them down and work to limit or eliminate them. Then move on to what foods make you feel energized, sharp, focused, agile? Increase your intake of those foods. Hint: the more you avoid processed
foods, the better you will feel.

▪ Movement Matters. The human body was meant to move. How much movement does your body need to move effortlessly and tirelessly? What kinds
of movement do you enjoy? Maybe you’re predominantly sedentary and the thought of exercising seems not at all fun. That’s likely because you subscribe to what other people believe you ought to do. Instead, think about what YOUR body needs in order to stay
effectively functional. A short walk after dinner may be it. You won’t know until you start DOING it and reflecting on how your body responds.

▪ Perspective is Priceless. What level of non-judgment do you need to be at in order to have a joyful, fulfilling and productive day? How does
grace and gratitude affect your outlook? How does criticism and judgment affect your outlook? What is your default attitude when you’re under stress versus not under stress? These are things you should know so that you can set your intentions every morning
and choose your perspective rather than allowing the world to choose it for you.

Your homework is to reflect on these baseline components and identify YOUR baseline. Then, actively strengthen your baseline every day. This is not easy but it
is worthwhile! Life is a one-time journey. Why merely exist, survive, or suffer through it?! Why not embrace every experience and thrive through it? Strengthen your baseline so that you can thrive, grow, excel and ENJOY every day that God gives you. Never
take time for granted. Make the most of the time you have because you truly never know how much you have left.
